Welcome to the expanded international Bookshare.org! Bookshare.org is delighted to make available an expanding number of accessible books to people from the United Kingdom (and anyone else in the world) with a qualifying print disability. We have several thousand accessible copyrighted books available for download, based on permissions from publishers and authors. Our goal is to continue working with publishers and authors to grow the number of books available globally.
What is Bookshare.org? How does it work? The general Bookshare.org website discusses these issues in detail. We suggest you visit the individual subscriptions page to learn more about subscribing. This web page talks about how Bookshare.org.uk works for residents of the UK.How do I sign up? The Bookshare.org sign-up process is done on-line, with one exception. We need to receive proof of your disability to satisfy our agreements with publishers. If you are registered as sight impaired or severely sight impaired, you can mail or fax a copy of your registration card or a letter from your local authority. People who are not registered, or have a physical disability or severe dyslexia that prevents the effective reading of normal print will need to have our proof of disability form completed by a qualified professional, such as an MD or a psychologist. What does it cost? A subscription to Bookshare.org costs US$ 75 (less than £40) for the first year, and renewals are $50. Subscription costs are payable online by credit card.Which books are available? We have a wide variety of books available on Bookshare.org for users outside the United States. Some of the publishers who have agreed to global permissions include the following:
- Harper Collins (fiction and nonfiction)
- Scholastic (children's titles)
- Baen Books (science fiction and fantasy)
- O'Reilly Media (technical computer)
We also have more than 1,000 copyrighted titles in Spanish. We expect to be offering more books frequently. We have a page explaining how to search our collection for the books that are available globally. When you sign up and become a member, Bookshare.org will default to showing you only the books you can download. Why aren't all books on Bookshare.org available globally? Because we haven't gotten permission from the publisher yet. In the United States (and many other countries, including the UK), there are accessibility laws that permit the creation of accessible versions of books for people with disabilities. Unfortunately, these national laws are just that: national. So, to distribute books around the world, we need to ask permission. Publishers and authors are almost always willing to provide such permissions, but it takes time to solicit their assistance. Authors and publishers wishing to help Bookshare grow its international collection can find more information on our author and publisher information page.
